North East River Camping Ground

Description:

This camping spot is just over the dunes from North Beach at 'The River'. The north-facing beach overlooks a bay with a wooded headland at the other end, with views of the outer and inner sisters islands. There are toilets about 100 metres away with water and a fire BBQ. Short term camping is available (maximum of 3 weeks) and is spacious enough to accommodate groups. Pets/dogs are welcome. The River campsite area is located app. 50 kilometres from Whitemark, it is a popular spot for locals in the summer months. There is a car park with picnic tables, fire BBQ's are permitted, however gas or fuel stoves are preferred. Bringing your own water is recommended. The area is suitable for swimming, snorkelling, surfing, fishing, boating, beach combing, photography and bird watching. However take care when swimming – undertows can be strong and changeable with the tide. Try your luck with a spot of fishing using a lure for Black Back Salmon around the change of tide, or snorkel to spear a Flounder or Flathead at low tide. The river mouth is also a popular break for surfers and body boarders.
