Walk, cycle or kayak to see historic shipwrecks on the Port River. It's also a good place to view dolphins, pelicans, ibis and cormorants. Port Adelaide was once a busy commercial and industrial centre. International and coastal vessels made their way to the wharves and industries along the riverfront. The Jervois Basin was Port Adelaide's major ship-breaking site. Many unwanted vessels were abandoned here between 1900 and 1970. At low tide on the western bank you can see the remains of the wooden ketch Alert, the four-masted schooner Fides, and the composite paddle steamer Trafalgar. There is a small park and viewing area. A boardwalk through the mangrove trees overlooks the site. You can launch kayaks and small boats from the nearby beach.
