Chance Bay, Whitsunday Island

Description:

Chance Bay is located on south-east Whitsunday Island, approximately 27 kilometres east-south-east of Shute Harbour. The 3.5 kilometre walking track that leads directly to Whitehaven Beach is the main attraction of this campground. Chance Bay is a great place to base yourself, with a small sandy bay for beach-combing, where you can escape the crowds of Whitehaven Beach. The sand at Chance Bay is the same white silica sand that Whitehaven Beach is famous for. Chance Bay is more exposed to the south-easterly prevailing winds and is ruggedly beautiful. The camp site is elevated, with great views across the sandy beach to Pentecost Island, the Lindeman Group and Cape Conway. The camp site surface is sand and dirt. A camping permit is required to camp at Chance Bay. The campground has a capacity of 12 people. Open fires are not permitted in the Whitsunday Islands National Park. Chance Bay can be reached on a mid to high tide by boat (only). On northerly winds, there is a good anchorage at Chance Bay however access can be difficult on south-easterly winds. Facilities include a composting toilet and picnic tables. Take your own drinking water, rubbish bags, fuel stove and insect repellent.
